Eastern and Central Vancouver Island:  magnificent old growth forests of 500 to 1000 year old trees.

World Famous Carmanah Valley with some of the largest old growth timber on Vancouver Island. It is hard to say you have experienced Vancouver Island until you have walked in the old growth forests.

Cathedral Grove:  This is a magnificent forested park. It is the easiest public access to old growth forest on Vancouver Island. It is well marked and only a few meters off the highway on the way to Port Alberni. It was originally gifted to the public by one of the original founders of MacMillan Bloedel Limited, a logging company. Mac and Blo was once the largest and most profitable logging and sawmill company and employer on Vancouver Island. Now Mac and Blo is owned by Weyerhauser, one of the largest USA timber companies. In the park near the highway down the trail is a single marked tree that is big enough to build 5 five bedroom houses. You can see the picture in the link below.

Cathedral Grove has been the subject of a recent high profile dispute between government and local environmentalists, who have camped there to prevent tree destruction by a planned widening of the roads by the Provincial government. This is only an hour away from the condos and is well worth visiting, as is Port Alberni one of BC's best big salmon fishing towns. In the summer you can easily catch 25 pound salmon in the Port Alberni canal.

http://www.craigdarrochcastle.com/

Location:  We are ten miles from the BC Ferries Duke Point Terminal, down winding country roads, also ten minutes from the Nanaimo Cassidy Airport, 1.5 hours by car from Victoria and 20 minutes South of Nanaimo.

Temperature and Local Climate

Temperature and climate:   On Vancouver Island it is always a beautiful time of year.

The condo is located in the Cowichan Valley, known locally in history as the "warm land", on the east side of Vancouver Island overlooking the Gulf Islands. We are near Ladysmith, 45 miles north of Victoria and 12 miles south of Nanaimo. Legally it is located ion the village of Cedar in Oyster District of  Nanaimo but for mail purposes, it is classed as Ladysmith. This area enjoys the most temperate temperature throughout the year in all of Canada.

Here is some information on the local weather patterns:

The condo is located in the North end of the Cowichan Valley, on central Vancouver Island, 12 miles south of Nanaimo. Cowichan is  known locally in history as the "warm land". This area is on the east side of Vancouver Island overlooking the Gulf Islands in south Nanaimo in the village of Cedar. The condos are 45 miles north of Victoria and about 12 miles south of Nanaimo. This area enjoys the second most temperate climate in temperature throughout the year in all of Canada after Victoria, by only one or two degrees.

Nanaimo has the highest number of sunshine hours throughout the year in all of Canada. Recently confirmed and announced by Environment Canada

Temperature range in Fahrenheit by Month:

  • Dec 38-45
  • Jan 36-43
  • Feb 37-46
  • March 40-50
  • April 45-58
  • May 48-68

April to June averages from 46 to 75 degrees F. June can be as high as 85 degrees F.

Ladysmith and the village of Cedar reports an average daytime temperature of 46 to 52 degrees F. during the months December to March.

Departure Bay in Nanaimo 12 miles north of the condo, is the second highest mean temperature throughout the year of anywhere in Canada. This has been verified by the Federal Government Fisheries Biological Research Station located there. We are actually second only to Victoria, which is famous for its temperate climate, by a couple of degrees C on average. However we have less wind and fewer winter storms, being on the leeward side of the Island.

There is hardly ever any snow here in winter. If it does snow, it normally lasts only a day or two. 2005 was an exception when it has lasted for a week. The wettest months are October and November. Locally, golf usually carries on right through the Winter on Vancouver Island, except for on colder days in January and February. That is one reason this area is so popular, the temperate climate. Vancouver Island is very large and the condo is centrally located between Victoria and the Central and North Island. There is lots to see and there are many interesting places to visit.

or .....just relax at the condo with family and friends
